Panel Discussion

Duke Pride Name (1)_edited.jpg

Duke University & Atlanta Comfort Conference

BIPOC Voices in Gender Diverse Medicine and Research

This seminar panel brings together BIPOC trans and gender-diverse leaders to explore the challenges and triumphs of navigating medicine and research spaces shaped by Eurocentric systems. Panelists will share lived experiences, community-rooted strategies, and visions for truly inclusive care and scholarship.

As conversations about equity evolve across medicine and research, institutions must not only acknowledge systemic exclusion but make room for leadership rooted in lived experience. This panel brings together powerful voices at the intersection of Black and Brown transgender and gender diverse (TGD) identities and institutional power voices that are too often invited for visibility but not for structural change.

Our speakers leaders in public health, harm reduction, research, and community care will share their experiences navigating and transforming predominantly white, cisnormative spaces in healthcare and academia. They will reflect on what it takes to integrate BIPOC TGD voices authentically into spaces of influence, and how to build bridges between community work an institutional research without compromising identity or integrity. Through personal stories and interactive discussion, we’ll explore:
● The tension between inclusion and tokenization
● Barriers and breakthroughs in gender-affirming care and TGD-focused research
● Community-rooted solutions for mental health and harm reduction
● What it means to create belonging, not just representation

We welcome all participants committed to shifting how gender, race, and power are centered in health-related fields!

Why are People Transgender?

This is a common question that people ask, including transgender people and their families.  It is important in these times to know what science has to say about transgender causation. This presentation will provide a snapshot of the objective science. There are five factors in transgender causation: genetic predisposition, epigenetic mechanisms that change how genes are expressed, Western culture gender system, early learning, and the decisions to proceed with transgender behavior. The presentation will discuss the evidence for these factors and will critique causation ideas that have little merit but are frequently cited in anti-transgender attacks.

The Gift of Transgender: Identity and the Road to a Deeper Understanding of Self

As I grappled with learning that my spouse was a transgender woman, I became aware that it is truly a gift to be able to walk next to someone on the journey to living their life in the gender identity that fits them. I developed a deeper appreciation for my own femininity as a cisgender woman and started to understand gender at a much more profound level. As a counselor, who specializes in helping gifted individuals form their identities in ways that fit them, I will describe a model for identity formation called the FIT, created by my mentor Andrew Mahoney, as it relates to the transgender identity. I will outline this process in relationship to a transgender individual's agency over who they are and how they interact with the world.

Avoiding Anti Trans Violence Being Safe in Large Groups and at Outdoor Events

Whenever we gather together it becomes an attractive target for hate and as members of the LGBTQIA+ community we aren’t hard to find. Savannah Hawk

Author, Podcaster, Advocate, Speaker

Detroit-born Savannah Hauk is an author, podcaster, advocate and speaker, living a confident, visible and successful male-to-female dual gender life and having come to understand the many reasons for gender expansiveness. Savannah also co-hosts the weekly The Fox and the Phoenix Podcast, reinforcing the same positive and inclusive message of diverse gender identity and multiple expression. She also leads conference workshops and has given two TEDx talks.

In this workshop … somewhere amid the misconceptions, stereotypes, and ignorance is the truth about non-transitioning gender diverse people. Whether from the perspective of a spouse or how one sees oneself, how can people work through the initial shock, fear and stress of coming to terms with a new gender expansive side? How do we overcome the shame that society has deemed necessary for someone having a gender identity and presentation outside the expected “norm”?

Dianna (Dee) Haggerty, MD, PhD

Family Physician, Transgender Health Advocate

A St. Louis native, Dr. Haggerty has lived, taught medicine, and practiced in 7 cities each with over a million population. She now practices as a full time family physician in rural Alabama. As a chronically over-educated academician (BS chemistry, MSc biochemistry (Univ. of Missouri), PhD physical biochemistry (Case Western Reserve University), MD and MPH in chronic disease epidemiology (Emory University)), she was an early entrant into the academic world treating gender-related health care issues. Professionally, she has been providing hormone therapy to both transmasculine and transfeminine patients for 38+ years in both the University and private practice worlds.
Dr. Haggerty is currently in MTF transition, having been on hormone therapy for the past 3 years and undergoing gender affirming surgery (as a senior adult). "Working" professionally in the trenches for three decades has provided a solid long-term perspective on where we have been, where we are now, and where we might be going with regards to gender care in the future. "Living" in those same trenches, as a transitioning physician, has presented an interesting and unique set of experiences, insights and personal-professional dilemmas.

Tales from the Trenches - Working Both Sides of the Fence

HOW and WHERE do we obtain essential medical care as transgender patients? The University and private practice worlds: Oh!... those ARE ever so different worlds, on vastly differing ends of the medical universe! We will discuss the essential benefits and disadvantages of each system of care. Treatment and gender transitioning are far more than hormone prescriptions and laboratory tests. How do we provide healthcare across the gender-aging spectrum, and what constitutes best medical practices? We will discuss best practices across the long-term healthcare spectrum for the new hormone recipient, the transitioning, and the gender transitioned/”living the life” individual.

Pills, Patches and Shots.... OH MY!

Hormonal therapy is hailed by most as a cornerstone of gender affirming medical care. Practiced wisely and under supervision, hormonal therapy is generally safe and effective, and helps to take you where you want to go! We will review the various established medical regimens used in both transmasculine and transfeminine care. That involves the HOW and the WHY we do what we do. We will then discuss how we effectively monitor your therapy, and then how do we manage the developmental expectations you have for doing all this (the WHAT)! Every medical therapy comes with both benefits and inherent risks. Yes, there are
downsides of hormonal therapy, and indeed some complications happen quite frequently. The good news is- you can determine the difference between maximizing the benefits and minimizing the complications! Make no mistake, hormonal therapy used for gender affirming care is widely practiced and has been a lifeline for so many of us as we struggle with gender related medical and psychological issues. As the old expression goes: know before you go!

Perhaps there is an intersex person in your own family.  This program will discuss aspects of living an Intersex life.

Can anyone tell you where you fit under the TG umbrella?

How do you know where you belong, and which is the right path for you? Do you align with the idea of being binary and struggle with enjoying the duality of being male and female? Do you connect less with being binary and feel more gender fluid or non-binary? We hear a lot about those who wish to transition and live full time as the opposite gender.  What about those of us who lead lives that touch both genders? In this open group discussion, led by S. Lisa Smith, all group members are welcome to contribute their feelings and questions with the group in their journey of self-discovery.

Embracing Our Scars: Self-Harm 101

Self-harm is still a topic that is not talked about enough, especially with the growing concern for the safety of LGBTQIA+ youth. For many, self-harm is an invisible struggle, often compounded by stigma and shame that leads young people to conceal their behaviors. As more LGBTQIA+ youth come out at younger ages, there is increased attention on the heightened risks faced by this group, including a higher incidence of self-destructive behaviors related to social stigma and negative experiences. Research has shown that self-harm, along with depression and suicide, occurs at significantly higher rates among LGBTQIA+ youth compared to their peers. This disparity shows the critical need for providing LGBTQIA+ youth with resources that affirm their identities and increase support.

As professionals and parents, it is important to be equipped with a clear understanding of the types of self-harm, average age range when it can occur, causes, populations, risk factors, as well as its connection to mental health challenges such as depression and suicide. It is imperative to provide protective factors for LGBTQIA+ youth in helping to replace self-harming behaviors with positive coping strategies. Compassionate, empathetic approaches are essential in engaging LGBTQIA+ youth, and this presentation provides evidence-based strategies for professionals, parents, and educators to respond to self-harm with care, sensitivity, and empowerment. By drawing on therapeutic techniques, lived experiences, evidence-based interventions backed in research, and experience from working with queer youth, this presentation offers actionable steps for combating self-harm and supporting LGBTQIA+ youth in their journey toward healing and resilience.
